01 Aug Caring for Screen Printed Clothing
Because screen printing doesn’t require the item being printed to be under pressure, almost any type of item can be screen printed. Clothing is a very popular choice for screen printing because it’s particularly durable. Oftentimes the screen printing holds up better than the garment does. This is why screen printing is the main form of printing used for concert t-shirts and other items that will have sentimental value attached to them.
Screen printed clothing items are very durable, but they will last longer if they’re properly cared for. Following a few simple tips will help you to get the most use out of your screen-printed garment.
You can get good use out of your screen-printed garment, even if you use and abuse it. For those items that you want to make last extra long, there are some things you can do to extend their life.
Read the care instructions on the item that has been printed and follow them closely. When washing your screen printed clothing, turn them inside out so the design faces the inside. Using cold water instead of hot will preserve both the fabric and the design. Avoid bleach.
Line drying your screen printed clothing is best for durability, but drying a screen printed design is okay too. Just use a low heat setting in the dryer, and remove the garment from the dryer as soon as the cycle is done.
If you need to use an iron on a screen printed item, iron it from the back side, and avoid ironing the design at all if you can. Avoid wringing out a screen printed item as the twisting could damage the design. When your item is new, wash it on its own to avoid having the color of the fabric bleed onto other items.
