Direct-to-Garment Printing

direct to garment printingDirect to Garment printing (also known as DTG printing) is one of the newer methods available on the market, with the first DTG printer created in the mid-90’s. Although early DTG printing had many limitations, most of these challenges have been eliminated with new technology. Today, DTG printing is one of the best methods for creating highly detailed, and vividly colored t-shirt prints.

Benefits of Direct-to-Garment Printing

  • Brilliant colors
  • Subtle shading and photographic details
  • Cost-efficient for small batches
  • Softest and most supple printing available

How Does It Work?

Direct to Garment printing works very much like a computer printer that you might have at home. A digital file is sent to the printer, which uses inkjet technology to print directly onto the garment. DTG printers use special water-based inks which are absorbed into the fabric. Because of this methodology, it’s easy to print varied colors and hues. However, direct to garment printing can also be limited in which materials it can be used on. DTG printing is best when used on 100% cotton, and other natural, untreated fibers. Fabrics must be treated with a primer before printing in order to ensure that the colors hold. Printing on polyester, or non-fabric materials like cups or pens isn’t an option.

Much like heat transfer printing, DTG is a great option for small batches, since it has low opening costs. This is a direct contrast from screen printing, which requires a lot of work to set up, but can be very cost-efficient in large batches. DTG, on the other hand, can handle a custom design right away.
